Spotlight on: The 49er High Performance Skiff

29er skiff

Designed by Julian Bethwaite in 1996, the 49er high performance sailing skiff is an Olympic grade twin trapeze boat. It features solid wings which generate massive righting moment and make the skiff easier to sail than others on the market.

The 49er’s hull offers minimal resistance with no noticeable speed hump due to its lightweight nature, and even in the most highly competitive races and tough conditions, the 49er benefits from easy handling and is controllable over 20 knots.

A fully carbon mast and 3Di moulded sail plan featuring a square top mainsail have just been adopted, ensuring the 49er stays at the forefront of modern sailing design.

The forward chine/rail turns a substantial amount of water back downward which makes the boat drier, giving additional dynamic lift and maintaining sufficient reserve forward buoyancy to stave-off all but the most extreme nosedive.

The 49er is a smaller, more simplified design than the Eighteen-foot skiff, yet it has achieved the same performance level. Plus, the 49er high performance skiff is easy to sail, more affordable, and is so efficient that it needs only 85% of the Eighteen’s relative power to achieve the same speed. The epoxy hull also gives it an extended competitive lifespan.

The 49er one-design skiff has transformed dinghy racing. It offers excitement, performance, and spectacle together with the unmatched ferocity of competition only generated in Olympic fleets.
