Report from Academy Sailor, Josh

“I just wanted to say a big thanks for giving me the opportunity of having my own brand new ILCA. I have learnt so much already since I got the boat on the 12th of April, just one day before my 16th birthday.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday present and I won’t forget that special evening when it was given to me. I have learnt so much from two very good and experienced laser sailors; Graham Cook and Mike Pridham. I have used the ILCA a lot since I have had it and spent a lot of time out in some very mental high wind conditions! Every time I am improving and learning new tips and tricks with the ILCA.

“I leave school very soon and I plan to get out even more on the ILCA to really get the hang of it and become a lot more confident. It’s such a great boat, a big difference in speed and feel from the pico and I think it will really help me push my sailing ability to the next level. In the past month I can already feel a big difference on how I’m handling the boat and what to do and how to rig more quickly and properly.

“I remember the first time I went out on a very hectic Wednesday evening and when I got back, I couldn’t have been happier to feel the ground touching my feet and for the rest of the night I had a big adrenaline rush. Sitting in school the next day wanting to tell my friends about it knowing that they wouldn’t understand, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it the whole day and just really wanted to experience that again.

“I got some lovely feedback from Dave, Jack and Sally when I got in, it was a really special night, Tom and I were talking about it for ages, it was really great. Sally has given me a brilliant opportunity to teach new people on Tuesday nights how to sail, and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s great because that’s where I started sailing and it will be nice to see them progress and I feel now that I will really be able to help because I was in their shoes not too long ago.

“So much thanks!”
